What are the things you value most in your coffee shop? (or cafe as we would say in Australia) friendly staff? cute location? super tasty coffee that you can't get enough of and have to keep coming back for? Well I've got the perfect place for you that has all three!
The aesthetically pleasing Milky's cafe on Dundas is all of this and so much more. The mini store is warm and welcoming, filled with majority coffee bar and a couple of stools inside. But grab a flat white ($5.72) or one of their many rotating blends and thoughtfully prepared drink specials, and sit outside on the sidewalk to watch the world go by.
Make sure to also browse the retail offerings, the carefully curated collections from Japan are delicate and refined - just what you would expect from Milky's.
Run by my friends and local Torontoian's Christian Lo and Fraser Greenberg, Milky's captures the spirit of the neighbourhood and serves one of my favourite coffees in the city.
What’s the concept behind the Milky’s (brand, ethos) and how did you get started?
CL: A coffeeshop that makes people happy. You can’t say the name without smiling.
Milky’s started as a creative approach to a community gathering place. Coffeeshops can be conceived in many ways. We wanted this one to be a place that’s bright, happy and full of local design gems.
What do you hope Milky’s will do for the Toronto coffee and cafe scene?
CL: We do everything for our customers first. Our hope is that other cafes can think along those lines.
Tell us about about your barista’s! CL: Our day one team is made of Caio and Jomar. Caio is the store manager and he loves volleyball, curly hair, and letting you order whatever you want, even when you’re wrong. Jomar is our community manager and the most popular person on Dundas. He likes denim, John Mayer, and talking about you.
What’s both of your professional backgrounds?
CL: We are designers with different disciplines. One is an industrial designer specializing in lighting, the other uses coffeeshops as his medium.
Where do you hope Milky’s will be in 5 years? CL: Exactly where it is now, maybe with a couple more “here”s.
Milky's recently opened their second location at Stackt Market, fittingly named Cloud Room. There, you can find a truly beautifully designed space, and of course amazing coffees.
Happy Coffee Drinking!
