Walking into Balzac’s Coffee Roasters' Distillery District location is like stepping into another world. The converted 1895 Pump House decor and ambiance transports you to a Parisian cafe on a warm spring day. Outfitted with a giant Vaudeville chandelier, the space commands a certain kind of grandeur but somehow manages to invoke a warm inviting sense of familiarity. The seating is plentiful inside and out, which allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere; bring your computer to do some work or just a book to read and be transported to a European holiday right in the heart of downtown Toronto.
The coffee menu has the standard offerings with the exception of seasonal drinks though out the year. The oat flat white is creamy and flavourful with acceptably micro foam (just how we like it in this house). The coffee is on the more expensive end and will set you back $5.59 all in, but as coffee prices are set to rise across the board this will become the norm (although, if you stick around for further reviews, I’ve found some fantastic coffee that aren't going to cost you your life savings). Food offerings are kept simple with the usual suspects of pastries and cookies, allowing the coffee to shine centre stage. If you're out on a day trip exploring the city of if the distillery is right around the corner from you, Balzac's could easily become your new favourite local spot.
For a quick grab & go coffee and treat, the Up Express location is the perfect pit stop. Located right next to the Up Express train, it still maintains the air of sophistication whilst being more of a 'passing through' spot. Try the biscotti ($2.95) if you’re hankering for a sweet pairing with your coffee whilst on your way to the airport or office.
If you can’t get enough of Balzac’s, they have a range of coffee beans, tea and a small selection of mugs and coasters on their website and in-store.
